Escaping the Blackness by Norma Jeanne Karlsson (A Cooper Brothers Novel) Review

Breathing one bullet at a time.

Jake Cooper’s life began when he walked into a conference room at Domestic Crime Agency’s headquarters and met the people who would become his parents. He was an adult, just starting out with the clandestine agency, but he was still alone in the world. Jake relished in the unconditional love his newfound family bestowed upon him. That feeling was short lived.

Jake craves the one skill he possesses in life as much as his next breath. Shooting. Behind a scope, with his finger at the ready, Jake can take a lungful of air without hesitation. He left his family in order to breathe. For six years he’s been tracking and eliminating targets for the DCA. He can breathe now, but he’s not living.

He misses her.

Cara Kelly’s life began when she escaped human traffickers and ran into the loving embrace of the Cooper family. The simple act of a young man giving her his hoodie rocked her world. She felt something good for the first time in seventeen years, something pure and untainted. But then Jake walked away from her and his family, leaving Cara with the lingering scent of him constantly chasing her with a hoodie she still can’t bear to let go of.

Six years is long enough to heal and grow. It’s also long enough to be hurt and betrayed. When their worlds collided again, one bullet changing the course of countless lives, Jake and Cara will be forced to escape the blackness of their past, in hopes of a future filled with light.

My Review
I fell in love with Jake when he was introduced in the Blackness series.  I was beyond excited when I learned that he would have his own story, and the Cooper Brothers spin off begins.  When you fall in love with characters such as these, you just never want the story to end.

Escaping the Blackness does not disappoint.

There is so much that is revealed about Jake. His story is revealed and it is beyond the heartache and abuse that anyone should bear.

Jake and Cara have a long road ahead of them in healing, trusting, and loving themselves.

Action, loyalty, twists, and complete surprises are all woven into this incredible story.  You can't miss this series if you love the Blackness series.

Get it, embrace it, dive into the world of a family bondness that goes beyond the link of blood.

When they meet it becomes the catalyst for Bryan to begin to remember the life of a neuroscientist who died in an accident along with his wife in 1980, right as they were on the brink of curing Alzheimer’s. Solving the mystery of their deaths will lead Bryan and Linz to an even greater legacy buried deep in the past. Both a thriller and a timeless love story, THE MEMORY PAINTER spans six continents and more than 10,000 years.

BOOK TRAILER:

My Review

The Memory Painter is a mesmerizing complex first novel that will test your imagination with a creative twist on time travel.

Bryan Pierce is a famous author who keeps to himself.  Since a child, he has had bizarre dreams that when he wakes up, he remembers how to do special talents. After going to specialists all his life, he learns to keep this secret to himself.

Linz Jacobs is a brilliant scientist working on memory genes.  She has had a reoccurring dream her whole life, vivid with details and pain, that haunts her.

Bryan and Linz paths cross when Linz decides to attend her friends' art gallery, that is hosting Bryan's incredible paintings.  Linz NEEDS to talk to Bryan about the painting, because it is an exact image from her dream.  So Linz calls Bryan and invites him over to her place to talk about the image that he painted so vividly from her dreams.

Now, jump back to the early 1980's where a group of scientists try to find a cure for Alzheimer's.

Time travel that spans over a period of 10,000 years.....

I can't even BEGIN to tell you how amazing this novel is. I was wrapped up in the story...fascinated by the creative imagination that went into the whole design of the plot.  Stunned by the research that had to go into making it all fit together with the past intertwining together. This is one story that will make you believe in true destiny and how it can survive over thousands of years.

The characters have a great back ground, making it truly believable how their choices in life fit into the story.  I was instantly drawn to them.  Their personalities were unique and lovable.

With a touch of sci-fi and an amazing love, this story will stretch your imagination...bend it...twist it...keep it guessing...definitely guessing, because you will never imagine what the truth will be.  Of course it is filled with twists, betrayal, and hope.  With a complete satisfaction of a reading "high", this is a story that will stay with you, make you ponder, and sigh with delight!

READ THIS BOOK...I can't say it any louder....this author will amaze your imagination!

My Review
The Boys of Fire and Ash's mysterious and dystopian plot will mesmerize your imagination.
The Ikkuma boys raise themselves in a fire pit of a volcano.  As their history is passed down by word of mouth over the ages, the boys raise each other until they become of age for their Leaving Day.  Hopefully by this time, they have trained their little brother, so he will be prepared for his own little brother, and pass down their traditions.  What lies outside of the fiery pit, they don't know until their Leaving Day.  No one has ever returned.
Urgle feels inadequate has a big brother.  He is a horrible hunter, and feels like he is failing his little brother Cubby.  Bullied by his peers, and sometimes called Useless, Urgle will do anything to protect his little brother.  When Cubby is snatched by a monstrous beast who followed a stranger into the pit, Urgle vows to bring him home.
Life will never be the same.
Urgle, with a few friends, will forgo an adventure of a lifetime.  While Urgle tries to prove he is not worthless, useless, and afraid, he makes rash decisions and encounters danger at every turn in a world he knows nothing about.
How devastating is it that these mothers leave their new born sons to be raised by other children?  Unthinkable...until the truth comes out.
I was so excited to dive into this adventure. Like, jumping up and down excited!  I loved the world created, and the characters were amazing.  When the words disappear from the page, and you can visualize the surroundings, smell the aromas, and feel the river on your skin, that is a sure sign of an amazing read.  The imagination that went into creating this world gives me goosebumps.  I fell for these boys, their despair of being without parents, their loyalty to each other for survival, their complete innocence to the outside world...tons of emotions brew to the surface while engrossed in their reality.
With tons of adventure, twists and turns, I think this is a read that will truly attract the male audience, right along with the females. There is no romance in this story, just an awesome journey of coming of age, and finding the truth.  I seriously could rattle on forever about this novel, there is so much I want to say but that would so spoil the fun of enjoying the adventure yourself.
Get this book...read it...embrace it...lose yourself in the word...you won't be disappointed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I write books for middle grade and young adult. I read them too. I used to draw a bit. When I was nine, I drew comics about a bird family who had a fuzzy orange caterpillar for a dog. They never ate him. After that, I gave a lot of embarrassing performances in my high school's musicals. I believe I stomped my foot when I messed up a line once. So I gave up on acting and decided to stick to telling stories. I packed up and left for the UK where I did my Master's in children's writing at the University of Winchester. Now I'm back in Toronto, reading and writing. I have one noisy beagle and one lab who doesn't stop eating. My first favourite book was Into the Land of Unicorns by Bruce Coville. I have since added a lot more favourites to my collection. They take up most of the living room.

The Archangel Agenda by A.K. Alexander and Jen Greyson Review

The first in a new urban fantasy by New York Times bestselling authors A.K. Alexander and Jen Greyson.

What happens when you're a professional assassin and your fiancé is murdered in retaliation for your latest kill? Just ask Evangeline Heart, who is visited by the Archangel Metatron soon after burying her soul mate, Griffin, and told she must rescue Griffin's soul from the dungeons of Hell.

In the first segment of The Evangeline Heart series, Evangeline (Lina) will join forces with a professional thief, a bumbling scholar, and an archangel who together will battle the forces of evil in hopes of saving the future for mankind.

Kindle Edition, 148 pages
Published December 2nd 2014 by D'Vine Press

My Review

Lina is an assassin.  After she is left alone, to be raised by a family friend, her life took a direction she would never have anticipated.  After her finance is killed because of something she did, her life is torn upside down.  Can she ever forgive herself?

After she is approached by Archangel Metatron, she learns what really happened with her mother's death....and there may be a chance that she can save her finance's soul.

On a search for ancient relics, Lina has the mission of a lifetime.  After a robbery gone wrong, she finds loyalty in a professional thief, and a professor that is wise in ancient relics.

First off, I love a story that involves ancient relics and their mysteries.  How fun it that?  This story was fast paced and full of action.  The adventure is thrilling, full of the unexpected, humor, and heartache over her mother's devotion.  I love the mystery surrounding Metatron, and how he tries to give clues, when he isn't suppose to help.

It's a fun read.  I look forward to the mystery behind the other relics that will come in the next installments.

Give this one a try!

This. Book. Was. Awesome. Writing this review, reliving the book, makes me want to go back and read it again, like right now. - Grace, 5 Star Review

Suspense, action, superhero powers, romance, great family dynamics and fabulous, quote-worthy lines make this a surprising and thoroughly entertaining read. - Madison, 4 Star Review

My Review

Kate's life is all but normal. Always being moved around, she was never able to make friends. You see, Kate has a secret, and because of that secret, there are times that they have to move quickly.

Kate is fast, and the star of the track team...Beating records even though she has to restrain from her full potential.  She has the respect of many, however there are others that are envious of her athletic ability. Kate takes the bullying in stride.  When something horrific happens, Kate's life is changed, she learns more about her past, and the action really begins.

I. Loved. This. Book

Once I started, I couldn't put it down.  It is one of those stories that you crave to learn more about the characters, love their personalities, and REALLY want the ending to go as you wish.  It has tons of action, complete surprises, romance...it has it all for a great read.  I loved that Kate was a strong character and didn't seemed fazed by what was thrown at her.  She went through a lot, however she ended up with a strong support system that she never knew existed.

This story really stayed with me after I finished.  Little things around me reminded me of it and you know, to me that makes for a great read....when it sticks with out long after it's over.  Sometimes I get sad when this kind of book ends!

The ending, WOW...completely unexpected.  I was thrilled how it ended.  I was wondering how the "second" story was going to weave its way through.  Intrigued?  You should be...this book is amazing !

A Day in the Life of Writing a Novel

Stage 1: To all outward appearances, I am wasting time and avoiding the blank page.

Author Playing Her Favorite RPG Game, “Dragon Age”

I call this as my “research” phase.

Gaming is fun and a great way to procrastinate, but I also find creative inspiration while playing RPG video games. I spend time pretending to be someone else in a world that doesn’t exist.

Hmm, sounds a lot like writing a novel.

As much fun as Stage 1 is, I’m eventually tired of playing in a world someone else created and I’m ready to play in a world of my own creation.

Stage 2: Some people (i.e. my husband) think that Pinterest is another technique I employ to avoid facing the blank page.

Author’s Pinterest Page

But this is research. I look for visual inspiration for characters, their “costumes”, places that may be settings, and even weapons or technologies that may appear in the story. Most of what I pin I’ll never look at again, but some pins I refer to throughout the writing process when I need visual inspiration for a description or scene.

Stage 2 may also include reading books written by others, going to movies, reading non-fiction books and articles about all kinds of things like gene splicing, cloning, high-tech weapons, and theoretical propulsion systems for space travel. I also create a playlist that becomes the “soundtrack” for my story. It’s not only fun to find songs that match the mood of my characters or a scene, but it also helps get me in the writing zone.

During Stage 2, I take lots of notes in my Moleskine notebooks as I craft my characters. I deal with their motivations and what needs to happen for each main character before the story ends. I also spend time writing out backstory for characters and exploring what the relationships between the characters were before the story begins. I typically fill a couple of notebooks with scribbles, drawings, maps, genealogy charts, notes, and even short story vignettes before I begin the actual writing of the story.

I love my job. J

Stage 3: This is the absolute worst part of writing. It’s terrible. I hate it.

Every story begins with a blank page. It is white. The cursor blinks, a virtual chant (in a nasty little sing-song voice) “You can’t do this, you can’t do this.”

The sad truth is that Stage 3 may last for a few days.

Okay, the whole truth is that Stage 3 will last until I find a way to banish the fear demons and summon that kick-ass Viking warrior chick that resides somewhere deep inside me. She dons her armor, pulls out her broadsword and cries out “For Narnia” (or something similar), and forces my fingers to pound away on the keyboard. If it wasn’t for that badass Viking chick, I may never write a word.

Stage 4: Obeying my inner warrior, I’ve gotten to work and written thousands upon thousands of words. And I’m all like –

Image courtesy of Tumblr, gifs for the masses

The story flows and the characters become real to me. They nudge me to take a turn here, create a twist there, as they reveal their story to me. It’s fun. It’s thrilling. I’m in the process of pure creation. I’m stringing words together in a way that has never happened before in all of creation.

I am a writing god!

Stage 5: The manuscript has been sent off to the content editor. I’m in love with the story I just created, so I know that the editor will be as thrilled as I am. I wait to hear the good news.

Six weeks later, I get the email I’ve been waiting for. The marked up manuscript and editorial letter is back!

I open the document and I see red “ink”. Lots of it. The margins are filled notes and comments. Lots of them. Why, there is hardly a line that doesn’t have a comment attached to it in the margins.

My dancing, celebrating muse has given way to this:

There is another stage that involves large amounts of wadded up tissues and perhaps a glass or two of wine with a friend (or an entire pint of ice cream eaten out of the container with a spoon – repeat as needed). But I’ll leave that stage out as it’s best not to dwell on such nasty, undignified business.

What now?

Repeat Stages 1 through 5 until I no longer grab ice cream when the editorial comments come back. ;-)

Thank you so much for sharing your day with us Natalie!!  I am sure at times it can be frustrating, but the end result is brilliant and I am sure satisfying!!

My Review

H.A.L.F.  ....Half Alien Life Form....Pretty much all I need to know to get pretty excited about this story!  The Truth is out There...yes, X-file Fan and total sci-fi geek here.  Oh how it has been a while since I have read a sci-fi book with aliens...squeeee!!  This is one to grab for sure!!

When Erika, Ian and Jack decided to skip a high school party to go out to the desert to star gaze and hang out, they never dreamed what they would come up against.  While they were fighting for their lives with a couple of goons, H.A.L.F 9 was fighting for his by trying to escape the prison that had held him for his entire life.

When the three groups meet in the desert, the real adventure begins.

H.A.L.F 9 has never been out in the human world.  However, when his and Erika's lives meet, there becomes a bond.  They both have a desire to protect each other.

So yeah, that's about all I am going to say ...  no spoilers here.  You just have to read this story to find out all the true goodness within.  This story has adventure and excitement galore.  There is a true demented character that you will love to hate.  I found it fascinating how H.A.L.F 9's powers started to emerge, and how he adjusted and learned from them.  As the story progresses, it just keeps getting better, with a twist thrown in here and there, and one heck of a cliff hanger at the end.  It is a fun read, and I am sure that all Sci-fi lovers will love this one.  This story is a fast and easy read, and the words just flowed for me.  My heart truly ached for the loneliness that just pores from H.A.L.F. 9.  Even though Erika, Ian and Jack have differences in opinion, they still stick together til the very end.  Get this book and dive right on in to take a ride that is just out of this world!
