MAYBE HE JUST LIKES YOU by Barbara Dee Nerd Blast and Giveaway

SYNOPSIS

Barbara Dee explores the subject of #MeToo for the middle grade audience in this heart-wrenching—and ultimately uplifting—novel about experiencing harassment and unwanted attention from classmates.

For seventh grader Mila, it starts with an unwanted hug on the school blacktop.

The next day, it’s another hug. A smirk. Comments. It all feels…weird. According to her friend Zara, Mila is being immature, overreacting. Doesn’t she know what flirting looks like?

But it keeps happening, despite Mila’s protests. On the bus, in the halls. Even during band practice-the one time Mila could always escape to her “blue-sky” feeling. It seems like the boys are EVERYWHERE. And it doesn’t feel like flirting–so what is it?

Mila starts to gain confidence when she enrolls in karate class. But her friends still don’t understand why Mila is making such a big deal about the boys’ attention. When Mila is finally pushed too far, she realizes she can’t battle this on her own–and finds help in some unexpected places.

From the author of STAR-CROSSED, HALFWAY NORMAL and EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT YOU comes this timely story of a middle school girl standing up and finding her voice

Praise for MAYBE HE JUST LIKES YOU

"The novel’s all-too-familiar scenario offers a springboard for discussion among middle schoolers about Mila’s experience, as well as her confusion, fear, and reluctance to discuss her situation with authority figures. Easily grasped scenarios and short chapters help make this timely #MeToo story accessible to a wide audience." —Publisher’s Weekly, STARRED REVIEW

"This timely exploration of a depressingly common experience should begin some useful conversations." —Kirkus Reviews
"Mila’s struggle between denying the intentions of her classmates and being self-aware and upset about their treatment of her is realistic and heartbreaking . . . an excellent choice to inspire conversations about the prevalence and scope of what’s considered sexual harassment, as well as help young readers identify what harassment could look like in their peers." —BCCB

"An important read with great potential for classroom use. Mila’s experience may resonate with young readers, who may need to follow up with a trusted adult." —SLJ
"Important for its relevance and examination of the otherwise little-discussed topic of sexual harassment among younger teens, Maybe He Just Likes You will appeal to middle-grade readers as well as parents and educators seeking to bolster a child’s awareness of this rampant problem." —Booklist

"The book is equally important for boys so that they might understand their own feelings and the feelings of those who might be victims of their adolescent humor. This title belongs in the school library as well as the classroom library." —School Library Connection

"Mila is a finely-drawn, sympathetic character dealing with a problem all too common in middle school. Readers will be cheering when she takes control! An important topic addressed in an age-appropriate way.” —Katherine Brubaker Bradley, author of The War That Saved My Life (Newbery Honor Book)

"In Maybe He Just Likes You, Barbara Dee sensitively breaks down the nuances of a situation all too common in our culture—a girl not only being harassed, but not being listened to as she tries to ask for help. This well-crafted story validates Mila's anger, confusion, and fear, but also illuminates a pathway towards speaking up and speaking out. A vital read for both girls and boys." —Veera Hiranandani, author of The Night Diary (Newbery Honor Book)

"Mila's journey will resonate with many readers, exploring a formative and common experience of early adolescence that has too often been ignored. Important and empowering." —Ashley Herring Blake, author of Ivy Aberdeen’s Letter to the World (Stonewall Honor Book)

"Maybe He Just Likes You is an important, timeless story with funny, believable characters. Mila's situation is one that many readers will connect with. This book is sure to spark many productive conversations." —Dusti Bowling, author of Insignificant Events in the Life of A Cactus

"In this masterful, relatable and wholly unique story, Dee shows how one girl named Mila finds empowerment, strength, and courage within. I loved this book." —Elly Swartz, author of Smart Cookie and Give and Take

"Maybe He Just Likes You is the perfect way to jumpstart dialogue between boy and girl readers about respect and boundaries. This book is so good. So needed! I loved it!" —Paula Chase, author of So Done and Dough Boys

Frozen meets Mad Max in this epic teen fantasy duology bursting with star-crossed romance, immortal heroines, and elemental magic, perfect for fans of Furyborn.

Generations of twin goddesses have long ruled Aeon. But seventeen years ago, one sister’s betrayal defied an ancient prophecy and split their world in two. The planet ceased to spin, and a Great Abyss now divides two realms: one cloaked in perpetual night, the other scorched by an unrelenting sun.

While one sister rules Aranth—a frozen city surrounded by a storm-wracked sea —her twin inhabits the sand-locked Golden City. Each goddess has raised a daughter, and each keeps her own secrets about her sister’s betrayal.

But when shadowy forces begin to call their daughters, Odessa and Haidee, back to the site of the Breaking, the two young goddesses —along with a powerful healer from Aranth, and a mouthy desert scavenger —set out on separate journeys across treacherous wastelands, desperate to heal their broken world. No matter the sacrifice it demands.

My Review
*Note- I first want to apologize that I don't have this book finished yet. I have had a death in the family and a baby shower to host that has taken a lot of my time in the past week.  So I will come back and finish my review in a day or 2...I know it will be quick, because it is already amazing!!

FAVORITE READ OF THE YEAR!!!!!!

The Never Tilting World has two worlds in one. Both with harsh conditions, both trying to survive the best they can.

Already, I have fallen for these intense characters and can't wait to dive in deeper into the complex worlds divided.  Just look at the cover!  How can you not want to dive into the dark fantasy and learn of their magical gifts....

This is a fantastic read full of mystery, fantasy, with major adventure...two adventures that will clash at the end with a cliff hanger that...ugh....cliff hangers...you love them and hate them at the same time....

You go back and forth between the two goddesses, learn about the lies and deception they have lived their whole life...however each young goddess wants to do whatever they can to make the world right again. Neither know the other still exists. Each struggle with different adventures to make it to the abyss....Odessa and Haidee have no idea what to do when they get to t he abyss, only that they have to go, being pulled by a power greater than themselves

Two Love stories that grow with each page turned...creative writing and imagination, this story is absolutely incredible!! I really can't wait to see where this story goes...

WHAT MAKES US by Rafi Mittlefehldt Official Blog Tour

Hardcover: 352 pages
Publisher: Candlewick (October 15, 2019)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0763697508
ISBN-13: 978-0763697501

Praise for WHAT MAKES US

What Makes Us is a heart-stopping, heartbreaking read — a book full of heart. Mittlefehldt’s thoughtful, nuanced exploration of identity pulled me in from the very first page, and I could barely put it down. Eran’s story takes a universal coming-of-age theme — finding out your parents aren’t who you thought they were — to a tightly wound and thrilling extreme. Most important, this book provides satisfying, much-needed representation of a contemporary, complex Jewish teen and his family. ―Lisa Rosinsky, author of Inevitable and Only

Provocative. ―Kirkus Reviews

A viral video reveals a teen’s dark family history, leaving him to reckon with his heritage, legacy, and identity in this fiery, conversation-starting novel.

Eran Sharon knows nothing of his father except that he left when Eran was a baby. Now a senior in high school and living with his protective but tight-lipped mother, Eran is a passionate young man deeply interested in social justice and equality. When he learns that the Houston police have launched a program to increase traffic stops, Eran organizes a peaceful protest.

But a heated moment at the protest goes viral, and a reporter connects the Sharon family to a tragedy fifteen years earlier — and asks if Eran is anything like his father, a supposed terrorist. Soon enough, Eran is wondering the same thing, especially when the people he’s gone to school and temple with for years start to look at him differently.

Timely, powerful, and full of nuance, Rafi Mittlefehldt’s sophomore novel confronts the prejudices, fears, and strengths of family and community, striking right to the heart of what makes us who we are.

WHAT MAKES US BY RAFI MITTLEFEHLDT EXCERPT

DEVORA

There are no more words. She has said all the ones she wrote down.
She touches the space where more would be, as if searching for them, as if willing them to appear. The paper crinkles under fingers chapped from days of dry air. She smooths it against the fake wood of the podium, flat, light, cheap. She does not know why she lingers, when she wanted this to be over before it began.
She looks up for the first time, at the people standing before her. In those eyes she reads so much: anger, pity, grief, anticipation, disdain. Suspicion.
Her heart aches. There are so many who will still believe what they believe, she knows. In the new silence, now that she’s able to measure the completeness of her words together, they feel inadequate, useless, impotent. In desperation, she searches for others, something, anything to communicate what she feels unable to get across, and says the next five that come to her mind.
            “This is not our fight.”

My Review

This story is an intense read that proves that family secrets can make a huge impact on life. Should you keep something secret to protect the ones you love? Or be open about it from the beginning?  Will knowing these secrets change how you act, change your beliefs?

Eran always wondered about his father...however his mother was always closed lipped and would not speak of him.  Until one day, when Eran organizes a protest, his whole world will be turned upside down. Eran soon learns who he can count on, and who will turn their backs to him...but one constant, even though it takes him a while to accept, is his mother...who has only wanted to protect him for the past 15 years.  Was she in the right?  Whatever you decide after reading this story, remember the sacrifice she gave for her son for this protection.

This story is heartbreaking at times. But true to life and what many people experience today with discrimination....showing people's fear of the unknown that they don't understand.  It has moments where small gestures are everything. It teaches you that someone else's actions is not your own and you shouldn't be judged because of it.  Lots of lessons to learn in this story and I hope it opens some perspective to others. This story has a huge impact.  I found it eye opening...and a great read.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

Shortly after the horrific Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, I read an article that mentioned one of the bombers having left behind a wife and three-year-old daughter. It was a throwaway line, but it stuck with me — I couldn’t stop thinking about that girl, who was too young to understand what had happened. When would she find out who her father was, and how would she process that? How would others react to learning about her family history? Would she keep it a secret? Would her mother?

What Makes Us began very simply as a story exploring those questions. But as I fleshed out the two main characters, Eran and Jade, their personalities took the story deeper, toward matters that are personal to me but relatable to so many. Eran’s volatility and tendency to react instinctively force him to confront issues of impulse control and anger management. And both characters’ uncertainty regarding their own pasts compels them to wrestle with self-determination and to ask, What makes a person? As the novel switches between Eran’s and Jade’s perspectives, we see them reluctantly frame and then try to answer this question, all against the backdrop of a community on the brink of chaos.

My Review

Old traditions Never die on the Black Water Island with rangers protecting a mystical herd of ancient deer.

Mystical powers of the senses help the rangers protect the herd from hounds when the rift opens at a certain time of the year. Traditions are passed down from family to family....until a fisherman's son.

After a childhood tragedy, best friends Meg and Cal are separated...Meg not knowing what happened to Cal after he is to be sent to child services after the death of his father. However, years later, they are reunited on the island...and their journey begins.

I loved this story. It was so unique and beautiful. You can't miss Meg and Cal's chemistry as it grows after being years apart. The Jealousy Meg has for Cal is real, the Regret that Cal has is heartbreaking.  It was so much fun learning about the mysteries of the island. The story flowed like a lazy river, smooth and flawless.

The Rift has all the ingredients for a fantastic read..Mystery, traditions, corrupt, twists, love....the list can go on and on...Just perfect for an escape from reality and let your imagination soar.

THE VINE WITCH by Luanne G. Smith Official Blog Tour

SYNOPSIS

A young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy of betrayal, vengeance, and self-discovery set in turn-of-the-century France.

For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn’t endorse the locals’ belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she’ll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won’t rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

My Review

Magic...Enchantments..Deceit...Revenge...all wrapped up in a fascinating new debut novel that will capture your imagination with an old custom of wine making.

I truly loved everything about this book...starting out as Elena as a toad, her instincts of survival, and the tickle in the back of her brain how to defeat the enchantment cursed on her by her beloved who betrayed her.

It was a joy to escape into this world of magic and travel this journey with Elena. Her will power is astounding.  With several twists to keep you guessing, and beautiful writing that makes the vineyard become a reality in your minds eye, it makes you want to believe that pure magic is real.

The characters and story were perfect....a fast read that you HAVE to enjoy with a glass of wine at your side. READ THIS....you won't regret it.

FROM THE EDITOR

It starts with a toad. A slimy one, too, warts and all. But as you may have guessed, with witches involved, this toad just happens to be enchanted. This toad, in fact, is the witch—and now that she’s free, she’s out for revenge against whoever has cursed her.

Elena Boureanu, former toad, is a vine witch. Her magic is responsible for creating some of the best wine of the age, and her legacy is all but ruined when she finally returns home. The vineyard’s new owner may be handsome, but he’s a city man of science who knows nothing about the valley’s vine witch tradition. And on top of that, Elena can clearly detect dark magic surrounding the estate. She knows her own curse must be connected to the hex on the fields, and she vows to put her world back into balance.

Elena’s story of redemption may be fantasy, but it feels real enough to touch. Reading this novel is like falling into an Instagram picture—atmospheric, and surrounded by the smells and tastes of the natural world. I hope you’ll fall with me. ―Adrienne Procaccini, Editor
