My Review

Gather the Fortunes is the second installment in the Crescent City series.  With Jude as the main character in The City of Lost Fortune series, this second book focuses on Renai as the main character.

With amazing detail, this story unfolds before your eyes with vivid detail of the city of New Orleans and the underworld. It is full of imagination that is blended with myths from different cultures and stocked with mystical creatures.  I loved how there was a short paragraph at the beginning of a chapter that brought different cultures and beliefs to the forefront.

I also enjoyed how this story had a different lead character than the first book, introducing new characters, however still keeping the ones that you discovered before popping up when you least expect it.

You discover there is more to the underworld than just the psychompomps collecting the souls when they die.  There are rules to follow...favors to be owed..and destinies to be fortunes.  WHEW...there is a lot to soak up in this creative world!

This is a fun read and full of the unexpected!!

Bryan Camp is a graduate of the Clarion West Writer’s Workshop and the University of New Orleans’ Low-Residency MFA program. He started his first novel, The City of Lost Fortunes, in the backseat of his parents’ car as they evacuated for Hurricane Katrina. He has been, at various points in his life: a security guard at a stockcar race track, a printer in a flag factory, an office worker in an oil refinery, and a high school English teacher. Kelly awoke with a start to the sound of a wet slapping on the rear window. K’in was peering through, his mouth slightly open, panting. Clearly he wanted Kelly to wake up. The playful creature had placed both hands on the glass. It took a few moments, but eventually, Kelly was able to focus on K’in’s digits. They looked different. He frowned and moved closer to the animal’s hands. Where was the webbing? He was sure it had been there before. Kelly touched the glass, wanting to feel K’in’s skin. He looked up and caught the creature’s gaze. K’in’s eyes were warm, almost loving. And blue. Kelly grabbed at Freya’s shoulder and shook her violently.

She protested, forcing her eyelids apart. “What?”

“Look at his eyes.” Kelly sounded excited. Freya pried herself from the warm spot on the old leather seat that had molded around her. She blinked away the sleepiness and tried to focus on K’in. K’in stared back. It was strange, and although she knew it impossible, he seemed to be smiling. Perhaps she was feeling him, or perhaps it was the huge iridescent sapphire irises surrounding one-inch pupils. Like blue fire, different shades of cobalt and electric arcs of white danced within. Mesmerizing. She sat upright. “What do you think’s happening?”

“Hell if I know,” Kelly replied. He was gawping at the creature.

“Señor,” interrupted the driver. “We’re coming into Callao.”

“Make your way to the dock, pier forty-seven.” Kelly kept his eyes on K’in.

“Kelly, look at me.” Freya gently pulled his face her way. She concentrated on his eyes, flicking her focus between his left and right eye. She turned to K’in. “It’s the same.”

“What’s the same?” He seemed offended.

“You both have the same color eyes. Exactly the same.” She pulled her hand away and sat back, glancing at Kelly, and then K’in, and then back again.

“Don’t be stupid. Look at him. They are bright blue. Mine aren’t even close.”

Freya surveyed him. He was right about one thing. When they’d met, his eyes had been a dirty blue, but now they had more life, more fire. “They are different too. See?” She pulled her smartphone from her jungle pants and quickly took a picture before Kelly could protest. She turned the device to reveal the display.

Kelly gasped. “What the frig has Moby done to me?” He grabbed the phone from her hand and flicked on the camera so he could see himself. He pulled at his eyelids, grimacing in as many ways as he could think of. “Am I gonna turn into a fish? Shit, after the last couple weeks, I’m surprised I haven’t grown bloody gills and sprouted pink hair out of my ass.”

“Nice, Kelly.”

“It’s all right for you. You’re not the one who’s gonna grow fins.”

My Review

 You will not believe ALL of the exciting elements that makes this story such a fantastic read! Secret Societies, ancient cultures, superior beings, conspiracy theories, scientific breakthroughs...OMG...I could go on forever. It's exploding with so much excitement and creative imagery, I was entranced throughout the whole book.  Not a single dull moment with this fast paced read. I am truly amazed how the author could weave all of this into a story and totally pull it off!

The characters were also amazing, each with a unique personality, each one with an important roll into the plot. It has a lot of drama, with a splash of humor...you will completely fall for Kelly's wit and cockiness, even at the craziest moments. And the emotions this story pulls from your soul...a roller coaster ride doesn't even come close to describing it.  It has a shocking ending....wow...I can't even begin to describe that emotion...You will have to read it to believe it...

This story deserves a reread, and I will do so at a slow pace so I can absorb it...I really can't wait where the story will lead, since I have found out there will be more to come...

So do I recommend it?? Oh hell yassss...

In his spare time Gareth has a number of passions, including: martial arts - he trained in Muay Thai at the prestigious EVOLVE MMA gym in Singapore and currently trains in MMA at Phoenix Sportkampf, Switzerland; playing acoustic guitar; studying ancient history; drawing; and most of all writing fiction.

An award winning author, he hopes to one day hang up the pharma hat and write full time.
