The Wasteland
In another world, one far removed in time and space altogether, a timeless journey awaits. The path is steep, the road is long, and it encompasses a wild evil. Here, in a place entirely different from our own, we discover the lost remains of a once vast empire and a love story long forgotten.
In The Wasteland, set against a barren landscape, we find a terrified woman named Lylah. She races along the overgrown highways of a war-torn country, pursued by a deadly enemy. Try as she might, Lylah remembers nothing about her past or who she is. Without quite meaning to, she stumbles upon a sinister forest and a small tribe of people. They have dark skin and hair. They speak in thick accents. Nothing about them is familiar, but at least they’re safe.
As she struggles to unlock the keys to her past, Lylah falls deeply in love with this primitive way of life…a way of life she’s never known before. The tribe’s leader is a fearless man they call “Matteo.” He is formidable and abrasive, but Lylah is inexplicably drawn to him.
In spite of uncertainty, one thing remains: an evil force governs this rugged land. The Opposition uses its power to oppress the tribes-people and they are quickly closing in on Lylah. Will she summon the courage to face her past in time? Somehow, Lylah’s memories hold secrets that could destroy the Opposition and break its tyrannical power.

My Review

The Wasteland is a fascinating story about a girl who finds herself walking a dissolute road, with no memory, and the chance to start over.

Lylah and her sister are rescued.  She wakes up in a strange place with no memory: none of her sister, who she is or where she came from.

As she starts to learn the ropes in the community she has no choice to live in, she discovers that it is actually an orphanage of sorts, and is drawn to the children.  However, many are hesitant to accept her because she seems so different from them.

As times progresses, she visits her sister, and starts to have dreams of a boy that she knows holds dear to her heart.  But are they dreams or memories?

This story was a fun and fast read.  The world created is creative, and I loved how the story floated back and forth to give you bits and pieces of the puzzle of Lylah's memory.  Lylah knows she has a great love, however, that is in her dreams.

It's fun to absorb how Lylah is drawn to the children and becomes greatly attached.

The Mystery of the great Matteo unfolds before your eyes much like Lylah's memory.  You grab just enough information to keep you wondering how the story is weaved together.  There are several twists and turns, and some moments where you go...AHHHHH....You should have seen them coming BUT you didn't...and then it all clicks together.  Pretty vague, right?  Well what fun would a book be if you knew what was going on?  That's the adventure, and Wasteland has a lot of it right along with the mystery of this imaginative world.

Lylah has the chance for a fresh start in a world that has crumbled around her.  With evil around, she's not as safe as she thought, and I have a feeling her journey is just beginning.
