Anthems Fall
Above a horrified New York City, genetics and ethics collide as the fallen emperor and a banished exile of the same herculean race ignite into battle over the city’s rooftops. In the streets below, a brilliant young scientist has discovered a technology that can defeat them both, yet might be more terrible than either.
Set both in modern New York City and in the technologically sophisticated yet politically savage world of Anthem, Anthem’s Fall unfurls into a plot where larger than life characters born with the prowess of gods are pitted against the shrewd brilliance of a familiar and unlikely heroine.

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 1

The Vatruvian cell.
Some experts celebrated their invention as the greatest technological breakthrough not only of the twenty-first century, but of the entire history of science. Technology had given rise to a new and unique form of artificial life. In the process, Professor Vatruvia had earned a Nobel Prize. Kristen Jordan had even appeared in the background of a Time magazine photo of their laboratory. The world had found its modern visionaries to extol, and their creation, the Vatruvian cell, was like nothing even the most decorated academics could have foreseen. Many of Professor Vatruvia’s peers correctly pointed out that his team had not created a form of life at all, because of the Vatruvian cell’s inanimate structure and loneliness of relatives within the tree of life. On the contrary, a complex machine—they said—was a more appropriate classification for the Vatruvian cell. Man had not created life; he had created the most involved and complex machinery in existence.
Professor Vatruvia had further shocked the scientific community by publicly announcing that his research into their incipient Vatruvian cell technology was still in the blossoming stages. From news headlines, to magazine articles, to television specials across the globe, the mainstream world was waiting for the next breakthrough from Professor Vatruvia and his Columbia research team. To Kristen, the end goal of their research remained at best vague. Despite her close relationship with Professor Vatruvia and her integral hand in the Vatruvian cell’s creation, Kristen was beginning to feel in some ways as uninformed as the general public.
“What is your field of study again, Cara?” Steve asked over the rising noise in the bar.
“Molecular pathology. I started my lab work on the Vatruvian cell a few weeks ago.” Cara said. “What about you?”
“Computer Science. Don’t have much in common with you biology nerds.”

Kristen looked at him doubtfully as she nibbled a chip with little interest. “Get real, Steve. You and I both know you’re the biggest nerd at this table. Are you going to bring up artificial intelligence again? Or maybe discuss which dumbass superhero is strongest?”

“Yeah okay,” Steve said. “How about we bring up the ethics of the Vatruvian cell again?”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
S.L. Dunn is the debut author of Anthem’s Fall, a novel he wrote amid the wanderings of his mid twenties. He has written while living intermittently in St. John USVI, Boston, Maine and Seattle. Raised on big screen superheroes and pop science fiction, he sought to create a novel that bridged a near-sci-fi thriller with a grand new fantasy. He currently resides in Seattle with his girlfriend Liz and their dog Lucy, and is hard at work completing the next book of the Anthem’s Fall series.

My Review

Anthem's Fall gradually pulls you into the story with unexpected twists and the power of strong ethics from two distant worlds.

Kristen is brilliant.  She is a scientist in the making, and one of the specialists on the team for the Vatruvian Cell.

Gravitas, one of the strongest warriors on Anthem, will pay the ultimate sacrifice for his strong belief.

Vengelis Epsilon, Heir to the throne of Anthem, will do anything to save his kingdom and his people.

These three characters of Anthem's Fall will collide in this intense battle of moral ethics and will discover that the protection of both worlds will become the ultimate battle.

When I started to read this story, I wondered how Earth and Anthem had any connection at all. This will be revealed as the story plays out and was creatively written.  I was in awe. The science and technology of an artificial cell in this story was completely planned out and to tell you the truth, kind of frightening.  It felt so real, I can envision it happening in this era.  The main characters had such an incredible back story to them, I really felt I understood each one.  Each one has a battle to overcome, right along with the main confrontation at the end.

This story contains TONS of action. If you like battles, Anthem is a world that has the experience.  I love a sci-fi story that isn't too techy that I can get completely lost in.  Anthem's Fall fills that spot.  This story will amazing you with surprises and keep you on your toes, that's for sure!

The flow of this story was mesmerizing.  You travel back and forth between Anthem and Earth for a while, and I found this important to how the two worlds combine.  It was flawless and smooth, when sometimes it can be confusing. And a little hint of a love story isn't too shabby either!

All in all, I loved this story and was left with that satisfied feeling that comes with finishing a book.  This debut novel has the ingredients I always search for.

When the evil you fear is born from within, who will save us…from ourselves?

Sometimes our souls hear what our minds and hearts refuse to accept. It will whisper its continuous cadence until we're strong enough to glimpse the truth. But when the soul's whispers morph into screams, we're forced to gaze into the mirrors of time and see ourselves for who we really are.

Grappling with her newfound leadership position, Stasia begins to experience a recurring nightmare of murder, as well as curious reveries about a violet-eyed girl who can control the moon. When tragedy grips the Tydes and several important relics are stolen from the Sons of Daimon, Stasia’s Council leaves for the forgotten island of Atlantis. Unfortunately Atlantis harbors its own secrets, and they are all calling to Stasia. As her nightmares become worse and she begins to lose control of her mind, those around her must find a way to reach her…and fast.

Olivia Campbell is used to getting what she wants, when she wants it. But destiny never asked Olivia what she wanted. Being Chosen to be a Paladin at birth had not been something she wanted, and she definitely hadn’t wanted her charge to be Anastasia. Unfortunately their irritatingly persistent Atlantean guide, Sebastian, seems to know all about her and the secrets she’s been hiding. As she fights to protect Stasia from an unknown force, Olivia’s own courage and loyalty will be tested in ways she never imagined. Will she be able to tell Stasia the truth before it’s too late for them both.

I am a southern belle at heart with a crazy streak that desperately tries to escape at every opportunity. I love all things nostalgic, rustic, and quirky. I've been told I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but I prefer to think of them as kaleidoscope glasses - swirling and morphing reality into something I can digest (who hasn't pretended those pasty lima beans were really kiwi strawberry jelly beans?).  When I'm not writing I'm making jewelry, painting, drinking sweet tea, watching the discovery channel, or going on random adventures in the mountains of North Carolina with my amazing husband.

ALA Vegas 2014

I got to go to Vegas!!  And on top of that, it was for the Convention for the ALA.

It was a trip that my mother and I had planned since I went to ALA in Chicago last year. I had so much fun, so we decided to do the Vegas trip.

It was my Mom's first time flying.

I had such a blast, and picked up WAY too many books. Some duplicated that I didn't realize that I had picked up, so I will be holding some giveaways soon to share!

I had to ship back 5 boxes home.

BOX 1

BOX 2

Box 2 was damaged. I have no idea how many books I lost. It was half full and I know I had it packed totally full. I just can't remember what I had in it, so hoping I didn't lose any signed books. So, to the USPS, hope you are enjoying all the books that are floating around there somewhere.

BOX 3

BOX 4

BOX 5

I totally didn't expect to get this many books. There were a lot more book drops than there was in Chicago.

ANYWAY, I got to meet a lot of authors.  I only got a few Pictures. In my excitement, I just plain forgot!

I got a couple books signed by amazing Holly Black!

I was in the Entangled Booth, and asked about a book there, and it so happened to be the author's book I was interested in, Tonya Kuper.  She is SO nice.  I had a lot of fun with her, and can't wait until her book released Nov 4. BE SURE to check it out, It's called aNOMaLY.

What if the world isn't what we think? What if reality is really only an illusion? What if you were one of the few who could control it?

Yeah, Josie Harper didn't believe it, either, until strange things started happening. When this hot guy tried to kidnap her, shouting about ultimate observers and pushing and consortiums hell-bent on controlling the world… Well, that's when things got real. Now Josie's got it bad for a boy who weakens her every time he's near and a world of enemies on her tail who want to control her gift, so yeah, she's going to need more than just her wits if she hopes to survive much longer.

THE COVER JUST PULLED ME IN!!!!

I also got to meet a few fellow bloggers!

This is Sophia Riggsby. She bloggers for Mundie Moms and also blogs for PageTurners Blog, who I ALSO help blog and review for. So I was really excited to meet her in real life!
Funny thing, we just happened to be standing in line for a signing and randomly met!!

I also got to meet this great teen blogger, who I have been friends with for a few years. I didn't know she was going to be there, and just happened to see her.  LUCK was on my side!

This is Rachel from Rachel's book reviews.

I had a great time, and SO glad that I had these business cards made.

Best Money I ever spent. I made a lot of great contacts with the publishers and these really came in handy.  Vista print is the best.

The Convention was great, the trip to Vegas with my MOM gave me memories I will never forget.  I am so hoping I can go to San Francisco next year.

If you ever get a chance to go.....DO IT!!

MY REVIEW

Eternally Bound is a love story about a couple from two different sides of society over a century ago. Caroline is the daughter of a wealthy farmer, and Thaddeus, the son of the gypsies. Of course, they kept their love a secret, until Caroline's parents try to arrange for her to met gentlemen for marriage.  Their love was strong, which caused them both to agree to a binding of souls, where they will be eternally bond, and forever searching for each other.

This story is so more than the average love story.  There is that paranormal twist that makes it intriguing and mesmerising to read. To make it even more dramatic, Caroline has a deep love for her present love. She finds this heartbreaking, because she can not deny the eternal pull to Thaddeus.

Caroline thinks she is going mad, not able to rid the night terrors that seem so real, and this attraction to one that she has never met.

Eternally Bound is beautifully written.  The flash backs between time were effortlessly easy to follow, and fit eloquently into the story.  I loved all the little twists that popped up throughout the story.  Those definitely kept you on your toes.  It's a fast read that will fulfill you with that satisfaction of believing in true love and all that it can conquer.

EXCERPT
I hear his voice delivered to me by way of the wind. It swirls around me like a comforting cloak that I'm desperately in need of. My skin is chilled like ice that makes its way down to my weary bones. My feet are bare, my frock torn, my hair marred with blood as I run through the forest seeking my heart. I’m distraught as I feel it being slowly wrenched from my chest, leaving it open, vulnerable and aching.
I feel him slipping into oblivion and I won't allow it. "You can't leave me here!" I scream through a throat raw and inflamed. I care not for the pain for it is insignificant. Pain of the flesh I can endure but a life without him I cannot. Not one day, one hour nor one second will I survive without him.
I wake to the sound of my own bloodcurdling scream, my body drenched in sweat. "Shh,” a male voice whispers against my ear. But it isn't his voice, the one I so desperately long to hear. I struggle against his arms as they encompass me, holding me against his frame. Betrayal, my mind screams, you are betraying your own heart! My inspiration for this story came when I was vacationing in The Blue Ridge Mountains and came across a stunning little area that seemed to be lost in time.
In the southern high mountain valley of Fannin County, is a mountain farm community named Dial, Georgia. Founded in 1834, this charming little community hasn’t a town. What it does have is small farms and a hand full of modest homes beside the fields and river banks. This community hasn't changed in over 100 years. For me, it was like I was going back in time. I instantly fell in love with the area and knew it would be perfect for the story.
