Death Wish by Megan Tayte Spotlight

IN SEARCH OF THE MEANING OF DEATH, SHE’LL FIND THE MEANING OF LIFE.

Seventeen-year-old Scarlett Blake is haunted by death. Her estranged sister has made the ultimate dramatic exit. Running away from school, joining a surfing fraternity, partying hard: that sounds like Sienna. But suicide? It makes no sense.

Following in her sister’s footsteps, Scarlett comes to the isolated cove of Twycombe, Devon, with grand plans to uncover the truth. Alone. But she hasn’t reckoned on meeting two boys who are determined to help her. Luke: the blue-eyed surfer who’ll see the real Scarlett, who’ll challenge her, who’ll save her. And Jude: the elusive drifter with a knack for turning up whenever Scarlett’s in need.

As Scarlett’s quest for the truth unravels, so too does her grip on reality as she’s always known it. Because there’s something strange going on in this little cove. A dead magpie circles the skies. A dead deer watches from the undergrowth. Hands glow with light. Warmth. Power.

What transpires is a summer of discovery. Of what it means to conquer fear. To fall in love. To choose life. To choose death.

To believe the impossible.

About this author

Once upon a time a little girl told her grandmother that when she grew up she wanted to be a writer. Or a lollipop lady. Or a fairy princess fireman. 'Write, Megan,' her grandmother advised. So that's what she did.

Thirty-odd years later, Megan writes the kinds of books she loves to read: young-adult paranormal romance fiction. Young adult, because it's the time of life that most embodies freedom and discovery and first love. Paranormal, because she's always believed that there are more things in heaven and on earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy. And romance, because she's a misty-eyed dreamer who lives for those 'life is so breathtakingly beautiful' moments.

Megan grew up in the Royal County, a hop, skip and a (very long) jump from Windsor Castle, but these days she makes her home in Robin Hood's county, Nottingham. She lives with her husband, a proud Scot who occasionally kicks back in a kilt; her son, a budding artist with the soul of a paleontologist; and her baby daughter, a keen pan-and-spoon drummer who sings in her sleep. When she's not writing, you'll find her walking someplace green, reading by the fire, or creating carnage in the kitchen as she pursues her impossible dream: of baking something edible.

The Archangel Agenda by A.K. Alexander and Jen Greyson Review

The first in a new urban fantasy by New York Times bestselling authors A.K. Alexander and Jen Greyson.

What happens when you're a professional assassin and your fiancĂ© is murdered in retaliation for your latest kill? Just ask Evangeline Heart, who is visited by the Archangel Metatron soon after burying her soul mate, Griffin, and told she must rescue Griffin's soul from the dungeons of Hell.

In the first segment of The Evangeline Heart series, Evangeline (Lina) will join forces with a professional thief, a bumbling scholar, and an archangel who together will battle the forces of evil in hopes of saving the future for mankind.

Kindle Edition148 pages
Published December 2nd 2014 by D'Vine Press

My Review

Lina is an assassin.  After she is left alone, to be raised by a family friend, her life took a direction she would never have anticipated.  After her finance is killed because of something she did, her life is torn upside down.  Can she ever forgive herself?

After she is approached by Archangel Metatron, she learns what really happened with her mother's death....and there may be a chance that she can save her finance's soul.

On a search for ancient relics, Lina has the mission of a lifetime.  After a robbery gone wrong, she finds loyalty in a professional thief, and a professor that is wise in ancient relics.

First off, I love a story that involves ancient relics and their mysteries.  How fun it that?  This story was fast paced and full of action.  The adventure is thrilling, full of the unexpected, humor, and heartache over her mother's devotion.  I love the mystery surrounding Metatron, and how he tries to give clues, when he isn't suppose to help.

It's a fun read.  I look forward to the mystery behind the other relics that will come in the next installments.

Give this one a try!

RED SKY DAWNING by Ian J. Malone Cover Reveal

Please Visit Jean Book Nerd for more Cover Reveal

Synopsis

Five years after the historic Battle of Dulaston, Danny Tucker, Lee Summerston, and the Renegades have settled nicely into life on Aura — yet none more so than Tucker. Fueled by a rising career as an ASC staff sergeant and a love unlike any he’s ever known, Danny is in the prime of his life and at last free of the demons that have stalked him for years.

Some demons never die, though, and when an old enemy beckons to settle a personal score, Danny soon finds himself swept up in the backlash of a climaxing civil war, and straight into the crosshairs of a father’s bloodlust for revenge.

RED SKY DAWNING is the much-anticipated sequel to 2013’s MAKO, and the tale of one man’s quest to bury his past and protect those dearest to him as the fate of billions hangs in the balance.

“Thematically speaking, this is very much a story about growing up,” says author Ian J. Malone, a native Floridian who now resides in Durham, North Carolina with his wife and step son. “Whereas book one was this plucky little tale about five bar-flies, rocking through hyperspace on the road trip of a lifetime, book two chronicles a lot of the unforeseen fallout stemming from decisions they made along the way. From an author’s standpoint, it was an intense story to write, but I think readers will really like where it leaves the saga entering the third and final book.”

Among the things readers can expect from RED SKY DAWNING are an array of new characters, a deeper look into the Alystierian Empire, and a healthy dose of political intrigue.

Still, Malone insists that MAKO fans will still find all of the action, humor, and pop-cultural charm that have since become the series’ calling card. “C’mon, guys. What’s a MAKO book without beer jokes and Funyuns?”

RED SKY DAWNING arrives on Amazon April 30, 2015. The audiobook will follow shortly thereafter on Audible and iTunes.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

As a graduate of Florida State University, I’ve written in a number of arenas over the years ranging from public health to news and sports. When it comes to my fictional work, however, I’m a firm believer that nothing shapes an author’s writing like experience. That’s why I credit my tenures in radio, law enforcement, sport management, and the military for much of my thematic inspiration, plus the legion of family and friends who’ve stood with me along the way.

Beyond writing, I’m an avid fan of audiobooks and sports, though it’s also not uncommon to find me at a concert (LOVE music!), a movie, or somewhere out by a grill.

At present, I reside in Durham, North Carolina with my incredible wife, son, and our two dogs — but I’ll always be a “Florida boy” at heart.

EXCERPT
Garrick barked to Becker, “We need more altitude to jump!”
Becker shouted over the rumbling, “Not an option in this dust storm.”
Gillie, Wexler, Farber, and the crew watched the viewers above their heads, searching for the ships behind them.
There's nothing. They see nothing. The dust is thick and red. Still the whining sound resonates closer and closer.
A.L.I.S. repeated her question, “What are the coordinates?”
Garrick ordered her, “Release A.L.I.S. Attention!”
A.L.I.S. stood behind Garrick, waiting. However, this time, unknowing to him, she was watching as her sensors shifted back and forth, sending out silent signals to Phoenix.
Becker shouted orders to Lieutenant Chiang, “Weapons online Lieutenant! All hands battle stations!”
Suddenly, from below the edge of the hillside, an almost invisible Dragar gunship raised up right in front of them. Hanging in the air, the Dragar ship turned to face them head on. Two Dragar pilots were in the seats, bringing the gunship about and rotating their gun mounts.
Phoenix responded as it looped over and behind the Dragar ship.
Wexler broke in, “We’re behind, sir!”
Garrick yelled, “Fire torpedoes!”
Gillie, Wexler, and Farber flicked the switches simultaneously as Phoenix lurched backwards. Three RZaR torpedoes hit the Dragar gunship front on, instantly incinerating it in a fireball.
Becker and Garrick raised their fists in victory, “It’s down,” just as Phoenix dropped its speed and leveled off.
Becker spun in his seat, “Where’s the other ships, Lieutenant?”
Lieutenant Chiang reported, “Looks like their gone, sir. Off the scans.”
Garrick interrupted, “Keep watching. They’re here somewhere. We’re going to have to maneuver. Phoenix isn’t built for dogfights.”
Becker began evasive action as he ordered, “Lieutenant! Pull the nose up and get above this dust!”
“Aye sir,” barked the Lieutenant.
Phoenix started climbing as the thrusters roared. Farber, Wexler, and Gillie maintained their watch on the scanners.
Then suddenly, three more Dragar cruisers appear from nowhere and locked onto Phoenix. They dropped down into a triangle pattern, starting their attack.
Lieutenant Chiang shouted in a high pitched voice, “Captain! Three Dragar cruisers off the starboard, 30 degrees!” Wexler, Farber, Gillie, and the crew manned the weapon systems as they searched for the cruisers.
Becker ordered, “Shields on! We’re in for a fight!”
Just then, one Dragar cruiser broke off and flew under Phoenix. Gillie yelled, “Dragar coming in under us, sir!”
Becker commanded, “Roll to the port! Come about Mr. Dessa!”
The Phoenix responded rolling off, exposing the cruiser. Suddenly, tracer fire shot past the starboard side.  Pinging could be heard as it bounced off the shielding.
Becker, yelling over the roaring, “Garrick! Take over! Captain to bridge! Evasive action!”
The bridge scrambled. Garrick grabbed the helm from Mr. Dessa. Thrusting the helm controls on full forward, he drove Phoenix straight toward the ground. Nearing maximum dive velocity, Garrick pulled Phoenix’s nose straight up as she curved skyward. The crew was driven in their seats as the force pinned them down. Two Dragar cruisers broke off, diving at Phoenix, making their attack from the rear.
Farber grasped what Garrick was planning. It was going to be close. Becker ordered the crew, “Hold on to something. It’s going to be a rough ride!”
The Dragar cruiser came at Phoenix full speed firing all guns, pelting Phoenix’s shields, then bouncing off.
As Farber and Garrick flicked the switches, Garrick grasped the guidance stick with both hands, gritting his teeth. He counted out loud echoing through the whine as Phoenix closed on the cruiser, “One, Two, Three! Now!” The Phoenix did a hard turn to the left shooting forward at full speed. The Dragar cruiser tried to avoid the collision as it rammed itself into the rock cliffs.
Garrick yelled at Wexler and Gillie, “Afterburners full on!”
Wexler and Gillie flipped the switches for the afterburner turbojets, spraying the Dragar ship with fire. Bursting into a fireball, it cartwheeled in flames.

My Review

Kate's life is all but normal. Always being moved around, she was never able to make friends. You see, Kate has a secret, and because of that secret, there are times that they have to move quickly.

Kate is fast, and the star of the track team...Beating records even though she has to restrain from her full potential.  She has the respect of many, however there are others that are envious of her athletic ability. Kate takes the bullying in stride.  When something horrific happens, Kate's life is changed, she learns more about her past, and the action really begins.

I. Loved. This. Book

Once I started, I couldn't put it down.  It is one of those stories that you crave to learn more about the characters, love their personalities, and REALLY want the ending to go as you wish.  It has tons of action, complete surprises, romance...it has it all for a great read.  I loved that Kate was a strong character and didn't seemed fazed by what was thrown at her.  She went through a lot, however she ended up with a strong support system that she never knew existed.

This story really stayed with me after I finished.  Little things around me reminded me of it and you know, to me that makes for a great read....when it sticks with out long after it's over.  Sometimes I get sad when this kind of book ends!

The ending, WOW...completely unexpected.  I was thrilled how it ended.  I was wondering how the "second" story was going to weave its way through.  Intrigued?  You should be...this book is amazing !

A Day in the Life of Writing a Novel

Stage 1: To all outward appearances, I am wasting time and avoiding the blank page.

Author Playing Her Favorite RPG Game, “Dragon Age”

I call this as my “research” phase.

Gaming is fun and a great way to procrastinate, but I also find creative inspiration while playing RPG video games. I spend time pretending to be someone else in a world that doesn’t exist.

Hmm, sounds a lot like writing a novel.

As much fun as Stage 1 is, I’m eventually tired of playing in a world someone else created and I’m ready to play in a world of my own creation.

Stage 2: Some people (i.e. my husband) think that Pinterest is another technique I employ to avoid facing the blank page.

Author’s Pinterest Page

But this is research. I look for visual inspiration for characters, their “costumes”, places that may be settings, and even weapons or technologies that may appear in the story. Most of what I pin I’ll never look at again, but some pins I refer to throughout the writing process when I need visual inspiration for a description or scene.

Stage 2 may also include reading books written by others, going to movies, reading non-fiction books and articles about all kinds of things like gene splicing, cloning, high-tech weapons, and theoretical propulsion systems for space travel. I also create a playlist that becomes the “soundtrack” for my story. It’s not only fun to find songs that match the mood of my characters or a scene, but it also helps get me in the writing zone.

During Stage 2, I take lots of notes in my Moleskine notebooks as I craft my characters. I deal with their motivations and what needs to happen for each main character before the story ends. I also spend time writing out backstory for characters and exploring what the relationships between the characters were before the story begins. I typically fill a couple of notebooks with scribbles, drawings, maps, genealogy charts, notes, and even short story vignettes before I begin the actual writing of the story.

I love my job. J

Stage 3: This is the absolute worst part of writing. It’s terrible. I hate it.

Every story begins with a blank page. It is white. The cursor blinks, a virtual chant (in a nasty little sing-song voice) “You can’t do this, you can’t do this.”

The sad truth is that Stage 3 may last for a few days.

Okay, the whole truth is that Stage 3 will last until I find a way to banish the fear demons and summon that kick-ass Viking warrior chick that resides somewhere deep inside me. She dons her armor, pulls out her broadsword and cries out “For Narnia” (or something similar), and forces my fingers to pound away on the keyboard. If it wasn’t for that badass Viking chick, I may never write a word.

Stage 4: Obeying my inner warrior, I’ve gotten to work and written thousands upon thousands of words. And I’m all like –

Image courtesy of Tumblr, gifs for the masses

The story flows and the characters become real to me. They nudge me to take a turn here, create a twist there, as they reveal their story to me. It’s fun. It’s thrilling. I’m in the process of pure creation. I’m stringing words together in a way that has never happened before in all of creation.

I am a writing god!

Stage 5: The manuscript has been sent off to the content editor. I’m in love with the story I just created, so I know that the editor will be as thrilled as I am. I wait to hear the good news.

Six weeks later, I get the email I’ve been waiting for. The marked up manuscript and editorial letter is back!

I open the document and I see red “ink”. Lots of it. The margins are filled notes and comments. Lots of them. Why, there is hardly a line that doesn’t have a comment attached to it in the margins.

My dancing, celebrating muse has given way to this:

There is another stage that involves large amounts of wadded up tissues and perhaps a glass or two of wine with a friend (or an entire pint of ice cream eaten out of the container with a spoon – repeat as needed). But I’ll leave that stage out as it’s best not to dwell on such nasty, undignified business.

What now?

Repeat Stages 1 through 5 until I no longer grab ice cream when the editorial comments come back. ;-)

Thank you so much for sharing your day with us Natalie!!  I am sure at times it can be frustrating, but the end result is brilliant and I am sure satisfying!!

My Review

H.A.L.F.  ....Half Alien Life Form....Pretty much all I need to know to get pretty excited about this story!  The Truth is out There...yes, X-file Fan and total sci-fi geek here.  Oh how it has been a while since I have read a sci-fi book with aliens...squeeee!!  This is one to grab for sure!!

When Erika, Ian and Jack decided to skip a high school party to go out to the desert to star gaze and hang out, they never dreamed what they would come up against.  While they were fighting for their lives with a couple of goons, H.A.L.F 9 was fighting for his by trying to escape the prison that had held him for his entire life.

When the three groups meet in the desert, the real adventure begins.

H.A.L.F 9 has never been out in the human world.  However, when his and Erika's lives meet, there becomes a bond.  They both have a desire to protect each other.

So yeah, that's about all I am going to say ...  no spoilers here.  You just have to read this story to find out all the true goodness within.  This story has adventure and excitement galore.  There is a true demented character that you will love to hate.  I found it fascinating how H.A.L.F 9's powers started to emerge, and how he adjusted and learned from them.  As the story progresses, it just keeps getting better, with a twist thrown in here and there, and one heck of a cliff hanger at the end.  It is a fun read, and I am sure that all Sci-fi lovers will love this one.  This story is a fast and easy read, and the words just flowed for me.  My heart truly ached for the loneliness that just pores from H.A.L.F. 9.  Even though Erika, Ian and Jack have differences in opinion, they still stick together til the very end.  Get this book and dive right on in to take a ride that is just out of this world!
